The minimum age to obtain a boat (Recreational Marine Driver's Licence) or Personal Watercraft (Jet Ski) licence in Queensland is 16 years old to hold the licence HOWEVER, you can do the training at 15 years 7 months old, as the statement of competency is valid for six months.
Boat: Yes, a Recreational Marine Driver Licence (RMDL) is mandatory for operating any powered vessel over 4.5 kW for recreational use. You must also obtain a jet ski license that is required to operate a jet ski. To hold a jetski licence, you must also hold a boat license.
You can do the training and obtain these at the same time during our training course.
Eligibility: Must be at least 16 years old. Certificate of competency can be obtained from 15yr 7mths ready for turning 16.
Complete an accredited BoatSafe course, including theory and practical assessment.
Receive a Statement of Competency, valid for 6 months, to apply at a transport office.
Apply in person at a TMR Customer Service Centre or QGAP office with ID, fee, and competency statement.
No, you never need to renew either your boat or jet ski licence in Queensland; they remain valid for life.
If you fail the theory assessment , you get another attempt after additional training. If unsuccessful again, you're deemed not yet competent and must undertake further training options. We do not charge additional fees for a theory resit.
No, you generally cannot get a ski/PWC license in Queensland without first holding a boat license. However, you can complete both licenses at the same time by taking a combined Boat and Personal Watercraft (PWC) course, which covers both the boat and jet ski theory and practical requirements in a single process.
